About Showcase 2024

The theme of Showcase 2024 was Pinoy: What Were We Made For?

In Pinoy, based on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie: The Movie, the story revolves around Bianca, who is known as Stereotypical Pinoy living up to the standards and expectations of Filipino culture. One day, she starts to lose some aspects from her culture, causing her to panic that she can no longer be the Stereotypical Pinoy she used to be. She finds out from Ate Baliw that she must travel to the Real World and find a girl and make amends with her in order to save herself and to prevent chaos from ensuing in Pinoy World. She travels to the Real World with Kenneth and meets new friends, Giselle and her daughter Sara: the girl she needed to look for. Through her life-changing adventure in the Real World, she finds out what she was truly made for beyond the expectations of being Filpino.

Aray

A flirtatious folk dance that has been Filipinized from the Spanish jota that originated from Camarines del Sur, Philippines. It is characterized by the lively and graceful use of tambourines by women in the dance. "Aray" translated to English from Tagalog means, "Ouch."

Bulaklakan

Choreographed by: Justine Rodriguez

A folk dance that showcases the beauty and vibrancy of Filipino culture, it incorporates movements and gestures that mimic the swaying and blooming of flowers.

Modern Tinikling

Choreographed by: Maia Peregrino & Sara Estrada

A modern twist on traditional tinikling. The dance was performed to the song “Poster Boy” by Lyn Lapid, an up-coming Fil-Am artist.

Pasigin

Choreographed by: Trevlan MacGregor & Richlyn Espedido

Named after the Pasig River, this partner frolicking dance represents fish getting caught in fishnets and escaping with movements resembling the flowing water of the river.

Sayaw sa Bangko

Dancers perform and show incredible skills and teamwork by dancing on a narrow bench. This folk dance requires the dancers to jump and switch places with their partner.

Maglalatik

Choreographed by: AJ Herrera, Rupie Ramos, & Josh Declaro

This crowd-favorite returns to the 26th Annual Showcase! This traditional folk dance involves coconut shells in a vest and other parts of the body, hitting said shells in time to a beat. The name stems from the Filipino dish Latik, or "coconut milk curd."

Waray Waray

A traditional folk dance originating from Waray-speaking regions, (Samar & Leyte). It is characterized by lively and energetic movements, typically performed during festive occasions and cultural celebration.

Modern

Through the 20th century, many Filipino migrants shared music with traditional forms back home, trading albums, tapes and CDs across the Pacific Ocean. Dancers will be expressing hip-hop dances with their very own medley and more recent songs.

Tinikling

A traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance involves at least two people tapping and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.
